A Culture of Desiccation

Sometime in early August I passed a nearly-ripe barley field when I noticed that the field was being sprayed. Ah, yes, this was desiccation in action. Over the past decade or more it has become customary for farmers to spray their nearly ripened crops with chemicals to speed up the drying process to allow for earlier harvest. Potatoes, cereals, canola and pulses are desiccated regularly. The most common chemical used is glyphosate, the active chemical in Roundup.

Tax Policy Affects Behaviour

Regular readers of this column will know that we, at South Eastman Transition Initiative, believe one of the most fundamental policy changes needed to achieve a sustainable economy is a tax shift. Our country needs to move away from taxing primarily income, whether at the personal or corporate level, to a place where we are primarily taxing the extraction of non- renewable resources, resources the planet we call home has a limited amount of.
