Climate Change and the Carbon Tax

According to NASA, the current carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is 419 ppm. The last time there was this much CO2 in the atmosphere was 2-5 million years ago. We are the first humans to have ever lived with so much CO2 in the air.

Carbon Tax 101

I don’t know about you, but when I hear someone starting to talk about carbon taxes or offsets or cap-and-trade or even UN climate accords, my eyes begin to glaze slightly and my brain starts making to-do lists or replaying scenes from the latest Crown episode. I’m mildly embarrassed to say that I don’t really understand what a lot of it means. I DO know that I am really feeling a pinch at the grocery store (I am now feeding teenagers), and also at the gas pump. At the same time, I am also very aware climate change is real, severe weather events are occurring more frequently and glaciers are shrinking.

Forgotten Flax

People have known about the health benefits of cod liver oil for a very long time. The first documented use is that of Dr. Samuel Kay of the Manchester infirmary who imported it from Newfoundland for internal use as early as 1776. Back then we did not know why it was healthy but since then many medical studies have shown that it is the omega-3 oil that has health benefits such as preventing or managing Type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and inflammation in general.

We now also know that flax seed oil contains the same omega-3 oil in high quantities.

A Glimpse at Soybeans

Soybeans is a very recent crop to Manitoba. However, soybeans is not a recent crop in the world. Nikolai Vavilov, a Russian scientist, identified 8 center of crop origins in the world. Each of the eight regions had a diversity of crops, both carbohydrates and proteins. Soybeans, a protein crop, originated in China along with its carbohydrate companion: rice.
