Summer Reflections

Ah! The lazy, hazy days of summer. On the radio, I heard an interview by Nadia Kidwai on the perfect recipe for a great summer. There were three ingredients mentioned: food, family/friends and freedom. I agree that all of those make for a great summer, but I want to add a fourth and that is a special summer connection to the earth.

Sheltering a Shelterbelt

I walk our dog every day down our gravel road. Once in a while, for a change of scenery, we go somewhere exotic to stroll: Bush Farm Road in Steinbach, or the unpretentious Tetrault Park walk in La Broquerie. But generally, day in, day out, winter or summer, rain, sun or snow, minus 40 or plus 36 with a humidex of 45, and all the days in between, you can find my dog Winnie and I sauntering alongside this grid road bordered with shelterbelts and fields and farmyards, greeting the day.

Mindful Sufficiency

Back in February 2015, Mark A. Burch facilitated a seminar entitled “Transitioning to Simplicity”. During this seminar, Burch referred repeatedly to the concept of “mindful sufficiency.” Instead of participating recklessly in a culture of consumerism, which our planet cannot sustain, he suggested that we need to simplify our lifestyles voluntarily if we want to leave a positive future to our children and grandchildren.
