Yard Tour at Gary Martens

We were treated to a fascinating evening of “ag-talk” and hospitality at Gary & Patricia Martens’ Kleefeld farm on September 9th. Highlights included an overview of the retired U of M professor's thriving garden, discussion about the role of livestock in sustainable farming, and an exchange of our own experiences with growing our own food. It was a great opportunity for amateurs and seasoned agronomists to benefit from Gary's hands-on knowledge. A big thank you to Pat & Gary for their hospitality!

Open Sesame Movie Showing

The Story of Seeds

Seeds are as important to life as the air we breath. They hold the blueprints to grow the food we need to survive. Much of the seed diversity has been lost, and with it goes the genetic diversity to grow a wide range of plants in a changing climate. Seeds should be cared for in the hands of people not managed by corporations. Open Sesame is a powerful and positive film that describes how many people are taking the initiative to keep seeds open sourced for everyone.

Join us for this moving film presented by SETI and the Organic Food Council of Manitoba.

Watch the Trailer.

When: Thurs. September 25th, 2014, 6:30pm
Where: MHV, 231 Hwy #12, Steinbach

Green Drink's at Gary Martens' Farm

Please join us on Tuesday September 9th at 7pm at Gary Martens' farm. Gary is retired, but was a Professor at the University of Manitoba Agriculture department. He is practicing some alternative farming techniques on his farm including using pigs to till up the soil and keeping his chickens in a chicken tractor. We will do some digging in the soil that will be a preparation for a soil lecture that Gary will give in the winter during one of our monthly events.

Directions:

Gary's house is at 26025 Hanover Road 34North which is a city block east of the corner of 216 and Hanover Road in Kleefeld. From Steinbach take the 52 highway west to the 216. Turn south on the 216, travel 2 miles, turn east (left) on Hanover Road. The house is the third driveway on the north side of the road, 26025 Hanover Road.
