IPCC – the time is NOW!

This weekend, the UN’s International Panel for Climate Change released the final report in a set of three, provides a stark warning to governments around the world. The findings of these three reports will support negotiations in Paris by governments from around the world next year to work out a universal climate deal.

A Response to Railway Disasters

Last week the TV news again showed us dramatic pictures of burning railway oil tank cars, this time near Plaster Rock NB. Just two weeks before that ten tanker cars carrying oil derailed just south of us near Casselton North Dakota. October 19 nineteen derailed tanker cars burned near Gainford Alberta. And no one needs to be reminded of the derailment and tragic fire in Lac Megantic.

Celebrating whales

This week the UN International Court of Justice ruled that Japan must cease it’s ‘Scientific Whaling’ program in the Southern Ocean off Antarctica. Since 2005 Japan has used a loophole in the international moratorium on whaling to continue killing them under the auspices of ‘biological research’. Their lack of publications from this so called research showed the program for what it truly was. They sold the meat to fund the program, which they said was necessary to understand the impact of whales on fish stocks.

Reflecting on winter

As the days get longer, and the sun actually starts to feel warm, we have been looking back at this winter. And what a winter we had. Officially it was a cold one, with 75+ days below -30C, and more snow than average. Our gas bill shows how hard it was, and we have been discussing the options for reducing it.

Beyond Bragging Rights

Last week Money Sense Magazine created a small stir with its “Canada's Best Places to Live 2014.” According to that magazine Steinbach is ranked 85th, down significantly from its 2013 ranking, when it was 65th. Interesting, but do we care? Well, I suppose a good ranking here gives us bragging rights, but beyond that, what does it matter? Those of us who already live here, do we really care what ranking some national magazine gives us?
