In hot water

We have had an interesting couple of weeks. First our water heater burst late on a Friday afternoon, and then the gas went off following the pipeline explosion. Our experience of living without gas is a topic on its own, but I would like to take you through the decision making process we went through to replace the hot water tank.

Nightmare bacteria

by Jack Heppner Wendy Stueck recently published a disturbing article in The Globe and Mail entitled, “B.C. Steps Up Battle with ‘Nightmare Bacteria’ Cluster.” She reports that since last summer at least 41 patients have been affected by carbapenum-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE). This “super bug” is resistant to carbapenum, sometimes referred to as the “antibiotic of last resort.”

Another train derailment

Last week the TV news again showed us dramatic pictures of burning railway oil tank cars, this time near Plaster Rock NB. Just two weeks before that ten tanker cars carrying oil derailed just south of us near Casselton North Dakota. October 19 nineteen derailed tanker cars burned near Gainford Alberta. And no one needs to be reminded of the derailment and tragic fire in Lac Megantic.

Investments and the environment

How much interest do you get on your savings at the bank? Currently the Steinbach Credit Union is paying 1.9% on regular savings and the Royal Bank 1.1% on their ‘high’ interest account. Neither is what you would call a good moneymaking investment and you have to pay income tax on that bank interest. But what would you say if you were told you could get a much better rate by putting your money on the roof of your house. Think solar power. Here’s the math:

The canary in the coal mine

About 25 years ago one could buy strychnine, a very potent poison, to control skunks and gophers. For skunks the method was to get a chicken’s egg and, using a syringe, suck out a little of the egg replacing it with the strychnine. The egg was half buried where the skunk would find it and next morning there was usually a dead skunk. The problem was that crows would eat the dead skunk and the crows would die. Then a fox or coyote would eat the crow and the fox would die. And so on.
