In 2050 …. Overview 1

In 2050, a 40-year-old named Sean and his young family live in a simple yet sustainable world in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. Sean has a full time home-based job as a local all purpose repairman, a job that he thoroughly enjoys. Sean loves to build practical items for his own children and for neighbourhood children. He also has a creative outlet as a sculptor. In addition to being with his family, Sean also has time to observe, to meditate, and to read about recent and ancient history.

Housing 2050

Last week in this column, George Klassen reminded us of something we all know: we are in the midst of a climate crisis and we will continue seeing manifestations of this crisis as we go along. A week before that, The Carillon introduced us to the newly appointed Economic Development Officer for Steinbach. The appointment of such a person implies planning. What kind of a city should we plan to be in 2030? 2050? Just bigger, or different? We tend to think that “the world will continue to move on as it has”, as demonstrated by the recent reveling in growth that we have seen in Steinbach, Niverville, Ste. Anne and other centres in Manitoba’s southeast. So what advice do we have for this newly appointed development worker?

Paper shortages have led to seed catalogue delays while an increasing interest in home gardening has caused the demand for some seed varieties to exceed the supply.
