This Rethinking Lifestyles column has often promoted healthy living, buying local, growing your own and things like composting, but have you ever considered honey in this category? There has always been a belief that honey is a pure natural healthy product but I hate to tell you that this is not always true.
I arrived at a moderate, conventional looking house on a 3 acre lot. The smell of baking bread greeted me as Gabriel opened the door. We talked while Gabriel tinkered in the kitchen preparing our “slow food” lunch of soup and bread but not just any soup and bread. All excellent food has a story as did this scrumptious lunch.
On Saturday, Steinbach was the focus of the Renewable Energy Community in Manitoba. Well over 100 people came out to learn, and to share their knowledge about cutting-edge renewable energy technologies available in Manitoba. Local vendors Keating Mechanical Service Inc., Solar Solutions, Sundial Building Performance, HeatMasterSS, Evolve Green and AC/DC Utilities shared their experience and knowledge about the products so that homeowners and other individuals can begin transitioning away from fossil fuel based energy. Speakers Bruce Duggan, Dr. Eric Bibeau, Eric Bjornson, Justin Phillips and Lorena Mitchell covered topics from individual engagement to global economics.
A big thank you to all who attended and every one who helped in making this event such a great success!
Two things happened a few weeks ago. The first was an announcement by the Government that they were considering increasing the tax on pop in order to combat obesity. The second was after the snow had melted I was able to count seventeen empty cans and plastic bottles in the ditch on a half-mile stretch of gravel road – the road I live on. And during the winter I had picked up many more that were actually on the road.
