Paying the price for Hydro

What went through your mind when you heard that Hydro may have to propose price hikes into the ‘double digits’? Can you take a 10% price increase? I’m sure most of those reading this would draw a sharp increase of breath at the thought. I have seen a couple of press articles about businesses which will really struggle because they have machinery and equipment that runs 24 hours a day. For the domestic user, electricity use is to some extent within his/her control. We can choose to use, or not to use electricity, and we can use energy efficient equipment.

The Southeast in a New Energy Economy

Were our nation to move to a New Energy Economy, how would that impact Manitoba's southeast? If this shift is well managed, it will affect our lifestyle, but not our prosperity. Overall prices will not go up! This is because the total, the overall tax burden will not go up. In the New Energy Economy it will not cost more to run government. Yes, the prices of things we consume that require a lot of fossil energy will go up, but this will be completely off set by the price of other goods going down. Goods that do not require much fossil energy to produce will be cheaper.

The South Eastman Transition Initiative is teaming up with the Provencher Green Party Association to present a public educational event about the proposed Energy East Pipeline. This pipeline poses a risk to the communities of Ste. Anne, Lorette and Ilse des Chenes as well as to the Winnipeg water supply. Are the benefts worth it? Is this a step in the right direction? Our guest will be Winnipeg Lawyer Douglas Tingey, who has represented clients to the National Energy Board with respect to the Energy East Pipeline.

The National Energy Board’s hearings on the TransCanada Energy East pipeline were suspended in August 2016 when the panel resigned under suspicion of compromise.
